Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a specialized area of the hospital designed for patients who need maximum medical attention and constant observation and care by nursing staff.

In the Intensive Care Unit at Hannibal Regional Hospital, nurses strive to help our patients in every aspect of care during their stay while maintaining open communication with family members.  It is important that family members participate in the care of loved one’s.  Patients need adequate rest periods between treatments, procedures, tests and activities.

ICU patients may be attached to many lines, tubes and machines.  Procedures and monitoring are performed 24 hours a day, so there is no “day or night” for the patients, therefore patients may feel a temporary loss of control.  The combination of their illness, loss of control, and being in the hospital can be frightening and exhausting for patients.

The loss of sleep and the effects of medication may sometimes cause patients to become confused or disoriented.  ICU patients need to get as much undisturbed sleep as possible to regain strength and return to an optimal level of health.
Highly skilled critical care nurses are able to spend a large amount of time in the room with ICU patients.  The goal of the entire ICU staff is to provide the best possible care for your loved one and for your family.  We realize this is an overwhelming and stressful time.  If you need further information, or have special needs we can assist you with, please let us know.
Please complete a Family Profile Card and return it to one of the ICU nurses or secretaries to help us keep your family informed.  The “Family Contact Person” will be called if the patient has any medical changes.  The “Family Contact Person” is also the one who will be able to call for any patient reports or updates and forward them on to the rest of the family.
As a general recommendation, two immediate family members may visit their loved one for 10 minutes each hour.  Hours may be amended at the discretion of the nurse according to the patient’s condition and procedures or treatments in progress.  Children under age 12 are allowed with an accompanying adult and with prior approval of the patient’s nurse.  Visitors cannot eat or drink in the patient’s room.

Cell phones are not permitted inside ICU.  Please turn off your cell phone prior to entering ICU.
Space is limited in the ICU waiting room.  For your comfort, please use the mall area.
A hospital Chaplain is available at any time. The hospital chapel is located on the first floor across from the gift shop.
